A BIG JOKE I RECEIVED THIS EMAIL FROM ALGOMOD AGENCY 11/10/2008

What exactly are they going to do with the last 4 digits of your SSN??? Nothing. It is standard procedure for a company who does background checks to use the last 4 digits for a background check.

No financial or personal damage can really be done with just the last 4.

If they were really trying to scam you, they would ask for the whole thing.

It's also not surprising that they are performing a background check for such a low level position. You never know what kind of "characters" you are going to be dealing with at this level, and you have to ensure you are getting a reasonable employee.

They also provide you with a way to unsubscribe from their mailing lists. They seem like a legitamite company to me. It all seems standard procedure when going through a recruiting agency.

For lower level spots, your going to have to give up your last 4 for a background check, its as simple as that. For higher level positions, you wont have to give anything unless its a government contract. Then you can probably expect to have to dish out the whole thing.

Social Security Numbers

Actually, many banks use the last 4 of the social as a PIN. I wouldn't give it out unless you are doing a background check, which would mean that the position would have moved quite a bit along in the process. Unless you're in-front of the recruiter with papers to sign (meaning you have a hard start date), I wouldn't give it out.

Perhaps they're trying to verify that you're allowed to work in the US? Sounds fishy to me.

Also, there is already an Algomod entry here. I'll have to spend some time cleaning up the website a bit.
